Phú Thọ Temple in Quảng Nam province,

Central Vietnam needs your help

Dear Dharma friends,

Phú Thọ Temple was built around 600 years ago.  Its original name was Chùa Gò Phú Thọ (Wealth and Longevity Temple on the Hill).  The current name is Chùa Phú Thọ (Wealth and Longevity Temple).  This temple's founders and succeeding monks had done a lot of charity work (e.g. prescribing free herbal medicines, taking in hungry and homeless flood victims, teaching people farming and other vocational techniques, making irrigation systems and building bridges for poor peasants …).  The past 100 years, due to wars, the temple completely collapsed.  However, memory and legends of the temple and its monks still linger.  Several local landmarks' names still had the "temple" word in them.  Several attempts by people to take the land for personal or public use were miraculously not successful.

In 1999, our founder, Rev. Thích Nữ Hoa Tâm, a Buddhist nun, went to Vietnam on a flood relief mission and encountered the ground of the temple.  Since then she patiently asked for permission to rebuild the temple to benefits others.  10 years later, in 2009, she finally got permission to do so.  In the same year, she and others cleared the land and found several artifacts of the original temple, which confirm people's belief that the temple did exist in the past.  In 2010, she hold the groundbreaking ceremony to lay down the first brick for the temple project and built the wall (as the temple in the flood zone, we have to build very strong wall to protect the land).  At this moment, we plan to build a two-story temple so that people could take refuge during the flood season.

Rev. Thích Nữ Hoa Tâm is in Vietnam at this time working on building the foundation for the temple.  Members of Phú Thọ Temple are mostly poverty stricken peasants and thus are not able to contribute much to the rebuilding project except for their voluntary work and prayers.  We are earnestly requesting for you help in finalize this work to benefit many.

Universal Virtue Buddhist Charities operates with transparency and professionalism.  We have Honorary Board (consisting of Venerable Nuns), Board of Directors, and Executives Board as well as many volunteers working together to ensure transparency and effectiveness of the different charitable programs.  Our volunteers and leading boards include Buddhist nuns, mental health experts, social workers, businesspersons, accountants...All are working together with compassion and responsibility in order to timely respond the needs of less fortunate people.  We sincerely appeal to your love and contribution to help us alleviate suffering, improve the quality of life, and purify our society.

With strong sense of responsibility to the donors and strong desire to alleviate the suffering of others, we strive our best to ensure the relief goods are directly delivered to the needy individuals and communities.  Our volunteers will also pay home visits to individuals and families whom donors ask us to help.  We welcome you to join with us in all the relief missions in Vietnam and the U.S.  All of our activities are documented with certificates and pictures.  Your contributions will directly go to the needy recipients.  Our volunteers pay their own expenses and contribute to the relief missions.  All financial matters will be disclosed upon request.  Universal Virtue Buddhist Charities is recognized the IRS as a non-profit public benefit 501(c)(3) organization.  Your contribution will be tax deductible to the fullest as allowed by law.
